Old review I wrote for a less than stellar website..Opinions wanted

7 Seconds
Take It Back, Take It On, Take It Over!
Side One Dummy Records
Released: January 25, 2005

”This is your parent's hardcore!”

This lyric probably does not bring to you images of your parents doing the creepy crawly at a Sick Of It All show in the early 90's. It does, however, make a point. This band, despite having been around since 1979, has not grown stale at all. 7 Seconds may be considered “your parent’s hardcore” by a younger generation, but these guys can still kick out some of the best, most furious material of their existence. Take It Back, Take It On, Take It Over will make you think it was the 80's hardcore scene all over again.

The band comes out fighting with a brand new album of their trademarked positive hardcore, proving they can blow any of the current crop of Terror clones out of the water. The first studio record since 1999's Good To Go, and 2000's Scream Real Loud, Live! should impress even the most jaded fan of hardcore.

The album opens up with "All Came Undone." The song kicks the record off at breakneck speed, and doesn't relent for the rest of the 58 seconds that it tears through your speakers. The lyrical content of the record is what you might expect from Kevin Seconds and company.

Songs like "Where's The Danger" takes on the topic of record labels signing the same old, same old, and music fans who, unwittingly, often pigeon-hole themselves to one style of music, or feel the need to dress, or act a certain way to fit with a specific genre.

If the state of what we currently define as “hardcore” seems boring and contrived, then this record is for you. This is the true definition of music with heart. Honesty has never sounded this sweet, or this fierce.

To be quite honest, there is nothing you can say about 7 Seconds that hasn’t already been said. They’ve influenced a countless number of punk rock and hardcore bands. They’ve toured the world over countless times. They’ve rocked you silly for 26 long years. They’ve outlasted all of their peers. They’re one of the best hardcore bands ever.

Really.

The world needs more bands like 7 Seconds to give hardcore music the kick in the ass it is in such desperate need of. Go buy this record, please!

Gorilla Biscuits and Hellfest and Niagra, oh my!

A couple weeks back Kirby Scott and I were talking about maybe going out to NYC mid-August to see the Gorilla Biscuits reunion at CBGB. We took the idea a step further tonight. While we were on X-Box live with Marlon tonight, Scott, Jen and I were talking about going out to NYC for the GB show, and staying out there all week. The plan would be to go to Jersey that friday for

,

an annual 3 day fest of punk rock/hardcore/metal/whatever bands.

This would be INCREDIBLE to do! Gorilla Biscuits is on the 14th. Hellfest is the 19th to the 21st. I've got 7 total vacation days left to burn. Andy has the 15th to the 19th off though, which turns my chances of getting that week off into slim to none. Hopefully I can get him to switch, and hope no one has the 22nd or the 23rd off.

If all goes as planned, I can drive to pittsburgh after work, and sleep at Scott's. From there we'd go to NYC for the Biscuits, and get a hotel or something for a few days and bum around NYC/NJ. Hit up hellfest, come back to Pitts. and sleep, and then go home the next day.

There's a huge amount of great bands playing the fest, and these are the ones I really want to see:

We were also toying around with the idea of going up to Niagra. We'd probably do that around Labor Day, seeing as I'd have a 3 day weekend. This could shape up to be an amazing end to summer. Here's to hoping everything works out.

Also, I realized after re-reading my last entry, that I was complaining about a lack of plans for this weekend. I just realized this sunday is the 10th, so I've got the Punk Rock Flea Market to look forward to!

I'm gonna take off now.

From here to there, and back again....twice.

So I started this blog tonight. I don't use my livejournal, and I rarely use the blog tool featured on myspace. I've always liked the look of these things though, so I figured I'd get one. Maybe the cosmetic upgrade of a blogger will lead me to post more than on livejournal or myspace.

This morning, while I was reading Mitch's rant of the day on Nothing Nice To Say he posted a quote from Ben Weasel's Blog. I took a moment to read it, and subsequently bookmark it. I suggest you do the same. If you're a big Screeching Weasel/Ben Weasel/Riverdales fan, it's worth a read. Ben has a style of writing that is really quite smart, but has a real biting wit to it as well. I think I'll end up picking up his book(s) (Does he have more than one?) at some point.

Next weekend is the Punk Rock Flea Market. It's at a Lutheran Church in Lakewood. I'm super psyched for this, as there are some things I'm looking to add to my cd collection:

  • Any/All Naked Raygun albums
  • Hot Water Music cd's I don't have
  • Any/All Dag Nasty Records
  • Samhain - November-Coming-Fire (Remastered), Initium (Plan 9 Records press & Remastered), Final Descent (Remastered) and Unholy Passion ep (Plan 9 Records press)
  • Both Common Rider cd's
  • Anything else that catches my little eye
That's pretty much all I've got for this. Tomorrow it's back to the daily grind. I can't recall what plans I have for this weekend. I think I might get out to the bar on Friday. Are there any shows on Saturday or Sunday I should be going to? Anyone?

Before I go, Feeding Frenzy Records is holding pre-orders for the new Daggermouth cd. The first 100 pre-orders receive the new album (I can't recall the title), The Daggermouth ep, and a T-Shirt (Designs are still being created, apparently).

Daggermouth are a band who plays a kind of Movielife meets Lifetime style of pop punk/melodic hardcore. Good good band, I back them completely, check them out!
